Moving with Plants Guide

Meyer's is pleased to offer you a compilation of relocation with plants tips, in order to help ensure that your plants undergo the moving process safely. Certain types of plants are very fragile, and it is our experience that if you follow our brief moving with plants guide, you will find that your plants will thrive in their new environment.

Moving with Plants Tips- Getting Ready for your Move
  • About 3 weeks before you move, it is advisable to repot your plants into unbreakable pots, in order to avoid breakage of clay pots in transit.
  • It is suggested that you prune your plants about two weeks before you move. This will make it easier to pack them safely. Most plants tend to benefit from regular pruning. Ferns and succulents do not usually respond well to pruning, so it is best to avoid cutting them back if possible.
  • A week or so before you move, you should make sure that your plants are not infested with bugs or pests of any sort. If you find that your plants are infected, you can treat them with a pesticide that is recommended by your florist or garden center.
  • On the day before your departure, organize your plants safely in boxes. You can help them to retain moisture by dampening the newspapers or packing paper that you use to stabilize them inside the boxes. You might want to lightly cover the leaves with a layer of moistened paper as well.
  • Keep in mind that if you are unable to move all of your house plants, you might want to take along cuttings. You should wrap them in wet paper towels and place them in plastic bags in order to help them to retain moisture.
Relocation with Plants Tips- Moving Day
  • Close the boxes and punch air holes on the top. Mark the boxes “do not load”, and place them aside.
  • Avoid extreme temperature changes during the move.
  • Unpack your plants as quickly as possible after the move. You can help them get used to their new environment by avoiding immediately exposing them to extended periods of direct sunlight.
It is our hope that you will find these relocation with plants tips to be useful.
